My family can’t afford health insurance, what should we do?

If you’re a: family with children age 21 or younger, caretaker or pregnant woman, you might be able to qualify for free health insurance through the Medi-Cal for Families program. Medi-Cal will cover all or most of your health care costs.

How do I know if I qualify for Medi-Cal?

To qualify for free Medi-Cal, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. (If you’re not, you can only get free or low-cost emergency services through Medi-Cal.)
• Make less than a certain amount of money based on your family size (the total number of adults and children living with you). Get the income limits for Medi-Cal.
• Not own more than a certain amount of money in "property," like stock or a house you own. Get the property limits for Medi-Cal.
• Be a family with children age 21 or younger, a caretaker or pregnant (Find out who qualifies as a "family.")

I have other health insurance. Can I still get services from Medi-Cal?

Yes, if you qualify for Medi-Cal you can still get services even if you have other health insurance as well.

If you have a job and want to sign up for your employer’s health insurance program and still get Medi-Cal, you can apply for the Health Insurance Premium Payment Program (HIPP). Call the Central HIPP Office at 1-800-644-7730 for more information and to apply.
