How do you get work experience when no one wants to give you the first opportunity?

I'm looking for a full time job in CNA work.

I have been looking for work for five months now. I spend eight hours a day everyday applying and going on interviews, and getting turned down, and the only advice I can give to everyone hear is don't give up. I volunteer and join community groups to network, but also to feel useful. The worst thing in the world is to spend sixty hours a week getting regected. Volunteering gives me a much needed vacation from the rat race. Don't loose hope, I know right now I would take any job to make the bills, but you need to know that the job you eventually find will be the the right fit at the right time.
My mom always told me if you can't help yourself, help someone else.

I had been working 9common labor) dish washer for most of my life; but at the age of 40 I was tired of JUST MAKING IT (if I did) for check to check!!!!! I decided to go to Concord Career Institute and learn Accountng (all 7 stages) to brighten my future!!!!! But my 9 month course was ABSOLUTELY no good to me
You may ask why?
Well I finished my course with a 3.5 (onlt .5 points away form PREFECT) in 2002. And I still have to today to get my first job!!!
That is right, the applications I put in for dishwashersay I am over qualified, the applications that I put in for Accounting/Bookkeeping/or any other faze of accounting say I do not have enouth experiacne!!!!!
Where do I go from here? My wifes Disability does not do any more than pay the usual house expense!!!!! Yes, I mean Rent, Lights, Phone, and Grociers.
We have been living this way for 5 years and I am totally exaused!!!!! I need some one to lead me to a career or a way to financial stability.

I am actually in the same position, don't have the USA job experience, how do i get a job?Moreso struck with the problem of transportation because i live in the county.There are no bus route here, what can i do to get employed?

But why go through all that volunteer and over the head crap to get a job? Volunteering, yes, is a great idea and yea, it may get you somewhere but today, most employers look for other things, like experience in the job at hand, they could care less that you cared for those suffering from AIDS, in Africa or Ethopia. Some employers are the "what can you do for me first then i can see what i can do for you next" types of people who do not care much about their potential employees, they only care about what you can do for them and the company but sometimes it helps or would help if employers met their potential employees half way, you never know, sometimes meeting someone in the middle or middle ground, helps not only the employee/employer relationship but shows the give and take of a company on a broader scale.

i totally hear you in this area. Believe me, i've been in this position. You see, i have over ten years of clerical/admin experience and employers expect a receptionist to have a 2 year bachelor's degree but what if a person is right out of high school or has gone to college but not yet maintained a degree but almost has one. I think too many employers are being too nit-picky in who they choose, you must have this or that in order to get the job, but like, come on, it's the year 2008, things have changed. Technology has changed, i think most employers are old school, forgetting that the internet is the key to communicating now. People who have done receptionist, secretarial or administrative work for a very long time do not or did not have time to accomplish a degree if they were working in an office for that amount of time. So, yea, i hear you...you try and try but nobody is allowing you the chance to make a good fitted job a reality. it's harder now that the economy has gone to hell in a handbasket. its not our fault either, really. I've been unemployed twice, not once...twice. I have had over ten years of clerical experience, can type over 70wpm, can file quickly, learn quickly but i cannot find the "good fitted job," anywhere. i'm frustrated.

Get your foot in the door. Work as a volunteer doing similar work for schools, government, or non-profit organizations. Make sure your resume shows everything you have done, maybe not everything you got paid for, that shows you would be an asset to the company you are applying to. Show that you have built up transferrable skills from your past unpaid or paid work or school experience.

See if you can get a different job at the same organization you were turned down at. For example, a woman from Ethiopia founded a school and was its first principal in a small town in that country. She used to volunteer for a non-governmental organization helping children who were orphans because of HIV/AIDs. She used to travel the back country and do health outreach, explaining to people in remote villages how they could improve their health. In doing this, she used her fluent knowledge of three languages.

In the US, she got her Nursing Assistant certificate, but kept getting turned down for jobs because she hadn't yet had much US experience, especially as a CNA. She decided to get her foot in the door at various nursing homes by applying for laundry or nutritional aide positions. Once she has impressed her employers enough, after maybe 6 months of work as a nutritional aide or laundry worker, she plans to apply for each internal CNA posting she hears about. Maybe now the hiring manager will no longer think of her as an unknown person and will be more likely to consider her for the CNA position.
